The Ediacara Hills is a mountain range in Southern Australia, in an area with abundant mines, where fossils were first discovered in 1946. At 700 million years ago, it is the oldest fossil lagerstätte, named for the Ediacaran geological period. The preserved soft-bodied organisms, including similar forms now found worldwide are collectively referred to as Ediacaran biota.
