Ginkgo Plant FossilsDescription: The Yixian formation of China contains a panoply of exquisitely- preserved insects, vertebrates, and plants. The Ginkgophyta probably originated about the same time as the Cycads during the late Paleozoic. The fan-shaped leaves of most members are quite distinctive. This one is atypical, with deeply dissected leaves. It is not easy to photograph, as there is little contrast. The last photo shows the specimen wet with water to aid in bringing out detail.
