Fireflies are members of Family Lampyridae. Thelast two or three abdominal sterna are often bioluminous. Adults well known for their flashing that is important in courtship and mating. The larvae are carnivorous, feeding on other insects, snails, and slugs. There are some 23 genera and 200 species of Lampyridae in North America alone.
