One
of the sure signs that a fossil site is a Laggerstatt is when
insects are well preserved, as in the insect fossils below.
Insect preservation generally requires rapid sedimentary coverage
before decay and predation occur. Liaoning is noted for its
excellent insect preservation. Identification of insect fossils
in shale is a tricky business. Usually, you do good if you can
get the Order
correctly.
